The Closing Ceremony ended the main part of the First World Civil Society
Forum (WCSF).
Mr. Sébastien Ziegler, Chair of the Forum, reflected back on everything that happened
during the two-week event, expressing his satisfaction about the goodwill of the participants to find consensus and a way to go forward, but also insisting on the amount
work still to be done. He thanked all the people and organisations that made this event possible,
in particular the volunteers, the interpreters, the International Conference
Center of Geneva and its staff, the Steering Committee members, the NGOs, academics and UN agencies who attended, the Swiss
Government, the Republic and Canton of Geneva, the City of Geneva for their financial support, and all the participants who
attended the sessions and made their individual contributions. Mr. Manuel Tornare,
Mayor during most of the preparation phase of the Forum and a long-standing participant in several civil
society initiatives, then spoke on behalf of the City authorities, thanking the
Steering Committee members and in particular Mr. Ziegler for the excellent work they produced. He also talked about the long-standing tradition of the
City to promote initiatives that correspond to its democratic and civic values. Finally, he predicted that civil societies
were going to play a role of increasing importance in the future in shaping public opinion and policies in our
societies. Ms. Viola Krebs, representing the Steering Committee then concluded by thanking Mr. Ziegler.
