Summary: Youth Forum Preparatory Session on Human Rights

Small Group Discussion: Intergenerational Justice

Time: 11 July 2002, 14:00-15:30
Moderator(s): • Mr. Kouraich Jaou Ahdou, Conference of NGOs (CONGO)
Presenters/ Participants:
Reporters: Amanda Chawansky
Language: English

This small group discussed how they defined “intergenerational justice” (two kinds between ages, age groups, or between youth and future generations). Some youth considered this idea to be like “age-ism” – discrimination against youth. Others discussed theory of resources distributed, the transferring of values, etc.

Participants discussed pension systems and what role intergenerational justice plays in this phenomenon.

They further talked about the voting age and the injustice confronted by those under the legal voting age. Two solutions we discussed:

  1. Percentage of vote goes to children (1.5%) and eliminates the voting age, or
  2. Have a children’s parliament that is representational.

Participants discovered that there are different ways to spurring political and social interests among youth (discussions, presentations, etc.), teaching youth responsibility (willingness to invest resources).

Conclusions

All participants agreed that youth need an ongoing voice.
