Training on Human Rights, Indigenous Peoples and Minorities (2 full days)
Keywords: Human rights, minorities, indigenous peoples, treaty bodies, Commission on Human Rights, working groups
This course was aimed at NGOs working with indigenous or minority peoples, and at the indigenous and minority peoples themselves. The purpose of the training session was to provide practical information about the human rights relating to indigenous and minority peoples. In particular, the course introduced two new UNHCHR (Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights) Guides for Minorities and Indigenous Peoples to assist these groups to make use of the UN to promote their rights.
The course provided an introduction to human rights and presented the main international human rights standards, the principal treaty bodies, the main human rights bodies and complaints procedures, as well as a detailed overview of the international work on indigenous and minority issues.
The principal concern was the small number of participants. Originally more than 100 people were expected, including the Francophone participants. Accordingly, courses were in English and French. In the event the group only numbered 20 or so, mainly US or European, and about 30% of the students were not working in NGOs. However, the group was very interested and active and we felt that the effort had been worthwhile.
